In order to make sure Brendan has the opportunity for extra-curricular math groups at his elementary school, I volunteered to HELP organize one group, Math Counts, for his school.
Let me just say that I'm NOT a math person. Math has not been my friend through the years. Can I do math? Yes. Do I like to do math? No. I tested out of any extra math classees at WMU and was thankful. No-RELIEVED. Just not a fan. But my oldest boy-he's a math kid.
I've wound up organizing significantly more than I intended. Let's remember, folks, I only volunteered to help organize Math Counts. I've been working with 2 other parents at the school, and one mentor parent. We've had meetings, emails and hosted info tables at 2 school events.
Then, the scope of Math Counts became ALL extra-curricular math groups at his school: Math Club for 1/2 graders, Math Club for 3/4 and 5/6 graders, Math Olympiad for 3-6th graders and Math Counts for 5/6 graders. All need math instructors, all need chaperones, all needed ONE CONTACT PERSON.
Sigh.
I didn't even raise my hand, I swear!!!!!!
The good news is that I've gotten enough parent volunteers to instruct math, chaperone the math groups and one parent who will come in one day per week and do all of our copying. The parent who administers the Math Olympiad tests has been great, too. It's all for the kids. Well, honestly, I did it for MY kid. That the rest of the children benefit is a bonus. Brett ended up with an outlet for his math, too, as a new grade 1/2 Math Club was formed. Not too shabby for someone who sees math as a four letter word.
