In case you've been vacationing in Northern Quebec or maybe Alaska, much of the US is suffering a heat wave. Those of us who garden know that heat=MELONS!!!
I went hunting for some itty bitty watermelons and found quite a few that were the size of the one in the photo-about the size of a shooter marble (oh look---there's an itty bitty one in the background!):
Then I found a few more that are larger than ping pong balls:
I stopped counting how many little watermelons I found when I hit 15. I have 12 plants so I could get more than 15, especially given how HOT the weather is this year. Last year my 8 plants gave me nearly 2 melons per plant, so maybe 24 watermelons???
Ok, so then I went hunting for some cutie cantaloupes. I was looking and looking and searching and finally found one! Check it out:
Ummm, yeah. Totally didn't see this one growing! That's my hand in the photo and I have some big ol' man hands (why yes, I can span an octave PLUS 1 on a keyboard!). Anyhow, this thing is bigger than a softball and was just so cleverly hidden among the foliage that I didn't find it until today. WOWZA.
I didn't take any photos, but I have several Honey Dew melons starting and my front yard planting of cantaloupe has a few melons growing also. We're going to have quite a melon harvest in August!!!
I have been making certain that I move these growing melons into good SAFE spots that are inside the rabbit fencing. Last year I didn't do that and had a few melons that had claw marks from who knows what kind of 4 legged creature. Not letting them varmits get my produce THIS YEAR!!!!
