We live in a remodeled 62 year old house. It's had 4 additions put on it, the last one done by us in 2000. Life in an older home can be interesting, but the past 2 nights, it's been down right smelly.
Brendan noticed water around the floor drain in the basement when he went downstairs to switch laundry yesterday. (yes, Brendan frequently does our laundry. He actually loves doing laundry, and will volunteer to do it in lieu of other chores, but that's another blog entry for another day.) Anyhow, he alerted Brad, who went to check it out. I left to go to a Scout meeting and when I returned, Brad had a plan of action.
He got the basement cleaned up, made a trip to Home Depot, returned with a temporary fix and we were good to go.
Until I came home tonight from handbells and found Brad in the basement. Cleaning. Again.
Brendan had gone downstairs to switch laundry (see, he really does my laundry!) and saw a very small puddle of water by the drain. Further investigation led Brad to the main stack and we made a call to the city to come out and see if it's in their end of the sewer lines.
In the interim, Brad is cleaning out the basement, something I've wanted him to do for like, oh, 4 years. The good news is that we only have a little sewage to deal with. The bad news is that we have 11+ years of junk thrown down in the basement and it all has to come out in case we do need a plumber.
Thank goodness Brad is handy. I can't even imagine what people do without someone like him in the house. We're lucky. He's stinky, but we're lucky.
