31 Days To Minimalist Living Day 1

I'm kicking off this 31 Days to Minimalist Living by tackling technology.

Email. We all have it and we all deal with it on a regular basis. But I've been sloppy with my email in the past several months. I haven't been reading all the newsletters I'm signed up for and I haven't been looking at all the discounts from stores and I haven't shopped at Save-A-Lot in over 2 YEARS so why haven't I unsubscribed from their emails???

whew. Ok-seriously, it's super easy to get distracted with email and it's super easy to sign up for emails from companies and favorite stores and coupons and so much more. Do you really read them all and promptly do something with them? Do you promptly read them all when you really should be doing something else? Do you really care if Halloween USA is having a sale in FEBRUARY?

How much time do you waste reading emails that don't require any action from you? How much time could you give back to yourself for other things by unsubscribing from those emails that you tend to just delete when you see them?

I have unsubscribed from 35 email lists as of today. Every day when I open up my email and see another email from a catalog or  a store I have to make a decision.

Does it stay or does it go? Simple, right? What kinds of criteria could you use to decide if it stays as a priority read in your daily email or if you just unsubscribe. Consider the following:

Do I want to spend even 2 seconds of my day deleting each email subscription that I never read?
Does this email make me think?
Does this email enrich my life or the life of my family?
Does this email help me save money?
Does this email get deleted every time I receive one from this source?

Take some time today to consider each email in your inbox. I've been pleased with the amount of time I DON'T spend reading email!!

    1. Yay, Patty!!! This is an easy thing to minimalize b/c we probably aren't emotionally attached to email like we might be to physical stuff. =)

  2. I am really looking forward to this series, and wow, did you touch on a great aspect of minimalism right away! I'm been slowly unsubscribing, and am trying to get more brutal about it :) Looking forward to reading the rest of your ideas, in between writing my own 31 Days series :)

  3. 498 e-mails trashed and countless e-mail lists unsubscribed from...one e-mail address down. Luckily, the others have been kept up better over the last month. Phew!
