Garden Harvest & Update Aug 6

It was my biggest harvest of 2012 today. 24 lbs, 10.5 oz picked!

I had a lot of broccoli side shoots, a lot of green beans, and my first slicing tomatoes. I forcibly picked that cantaloupe. It was swarming with ants-I've noticed that when you see ants near the stem, it means the stem is starting to break away and the ants are enjoying the sugar. Well, this stem was NOT willing to break off, but the melon was huge, the coloring was right and the ants were enjoying it. I'll let it sit on the counter overnight just to make sure it ripens up.

My middle son picked (and weighed ON HIS OWN!) over 11 pounds of canatloupe last week, too. Amazing.

I haven't been in my garden or perennial beds in 6 days, due to the tragic loss of Brad's parents last week.  They were killed when a severe storm knocked over a few trees onto their cottage. They were lovely people and their sudden departure to be with our Lord is really taking it's toll on our family. We are working on trudging forward with our lives, but the hole this leaves is quite tremendous. Please keep our family in your prayers.

  2. While we have never met I have been thinking of you and your family. Loss is always hard but such a sudden and unexpected loss like this is often more difficult. I hope your family can start healing itself.
