Workin' in the Garden Today.

It's a hot one today-kissing 90-and I finally caved and let Bryce plant his corn seeds. I was not interested in growing corn as the last time we grew it, it developed corn smut and it was just not worth it. Too much space for such low yield. Bryce wanted corn last year and I kept telling him no. Fast forward to Easter this year and we took the kids to Meijer to spend some of the Easter money they'd been gifted.

Brendan bought some pop & snacks.
Brett bought something for the Wii.
Bryce bought bologna and corn seeds.

Yup. Bologna and corn seeds. What can I say, the kid knows what he likes! I am not counting his corn in my harvest totals because I just don't want to. Well, if the corn produces many ears I might reconsider.

I also (finally!) got the new asparagus crowns planted, 15 Mary Washington. They went into the defunct asparagus bed and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Here's a photo:

Some other action in the garden:

Loads of little green strawberries!!! Time to protect them from the birds =)

Peas, about 8' of peas. They were planted out in 2 stages, so the March planted ones are starting to climb and the April planted ones are about 2" tall.

Check out my sweet green house. This was a gift from my Dad-and I have to say that I'm really enjoying it. It's a little shy of 3' x 8', but it's quite sturdy and even came with a shade cloth. You can have both side flaps wide open or zip them down & leave a screened "window" open or keep the whole thing zipped tight. It has grommets along the reinforced edge and comes with stakes. Best of all, it's built like little kids pop up play tents so it folds down & fits into it's 2' circular storage case. I used it to warm up the soil & planted some carrots and spinach under it. This is my first foray into extending the growing season and I hope to grow some lettuce and other greens in it this Fall.

  1. What are the odds that we would both be putting out Mary Washington asparagus and know about it? Our strawberries are in the same stage as yours. It sounds like we better get the netting over them too.

    1. I know! I was cracking up that you had planted our YOUR Mary WAshington, too. =) Great gardeners think alike. Cover those berries--we lost ALL of them last year to a frenzied flock of birds.

    2. I didnt realize how destructive birds are until trying to grow things you have vested interest in. :)

That's cute about the corn and bologna.

  2. So jealous of your asparagus bed. I better get to the farmers market early this morning to snag some if I want it! Asparagus goes fast around here.

I love your green house! That is awesome. I wish you could come plant some stuff here in my yard. Jason is doing the garden this year and, well, he dug the area up once....

    1. I really thought Jason was into gardening--after all, he built that DELUXE cold frame for you guys. Well, maybe you can get a few things in pots... =) The little greenhouse is so nice-I'll get more use out of it this fall when temps start dropping.
